Not to be confused with ToCA 2 Touring Cars, this game is a challenging but ultimately highly rewarding race driving simulator. In the game, you will work your way up the professional driving career ladder by taking part in all kinds of different motorsport disciplines. The game was very well received on release and has aged well, with a realistic but not too intimidating handling model and graphics that still hold up reasonably well more than ten years later. Unfortunately, Codemasters made the disappointing decision to burden this game with Starforce copy protection, making it particularly difficult to play on modern PCs.

There was just one patch released for the game and you should make sure to install it before trying to play. Download the 1.2 patch from Patches Scrolls here. Make sure you download the universal version of the patch and not the Russian only patch. The patch is downloaded as a Zip file, simply run the RD2V12UPGRADE.exe from inside the Zip file and the patch will be applied automatically.

TOCA Race Driver 3 includes 120 Championships and 35 types of racing through the Championship in World Tour, Pro Career, and Free Race. Also, it has Bonus Championships in different disciplines. They take place largely in the UK and Germany, though many more tracks are unlocked by winning cups in Pro Career, or by setting a lap time record on a course within Pro Career mode. Open-wheel, GT, Oval racing, Rallying and Off-road racing were all featured and can be raced in either a detailed Pro Career mode or an open-ended World Tour. The game features many real-life competitions, including British GT, DTM, IRL and V8 Supercars, as well as a Vintage series, other GT series, and Rally. The Formula Williams FW27 is the featured car of the Formula 1 series in the game. The career mode progresses with various cutscenes featuring the player character's crew chief providing driving tips and general commentary.

Settings for racing are largely customisable. Players can adjust the number of laps and difficulty level. Race rules such as wrong way, corner-cutting, and careless driving penalties, and racing flags can also be turned on or off. Players can choose to qualify for races, which allows them to secure a position on the starting grid rather than being placed at the back.

Online play allows 12 and 8 players on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, respectively. It is the only racing simulator for PlayStation 2 with an online racing mode. For the PC up to 12 players could race together with the built-in GameSpy Server or by using a LAN. When GameSpy closed in 2014 online multiplayer was subsequently made possible using the Free Tunngle Network but was shut down in April 2018 due to pending requirements of the new European General Data Protection Regulation.

The damage model from TOCA Race Driver 2 is improved. Codemasters added additional damage elements for engine, suspension, axle and steering. Tyre modelling has also been improved. Tyres are affected by being cool or hot and wear over time.[4] The developers wanted to improve the single-player racing experience. Johnathan Davis, designer on Race Driver 3 felt that in too many games "you start on the grid and either get left behind or your overtake the AI and go on to win. We really wanted people to battle all the way through".[4] Codemasters interviewed real racing drivers to learn what challenges they would face on the track, such as judging braking distances. These were then implemented into the game's AI.[4] It supports Introversion Software's amBX gaming lights.[5]

* Replay saving. Any time a replay is available to view at the end of a race, it is now possible to select Save Replay on the Race Results screen. There is a Load Replay option on the Select Mode screen.

Following on from last month's singleplayer demo, TOC A Race Driver 2 is back with a new demo showcasing the multiplayer game. Both LAN and Internet play are supported, so you can either race your office colleagues when the boss's back is turned, or take on someone less likely to taunt you over the top of your computer.

There are three races on offer, starting with a Formula Ford race at the Oulton Park circuit. These nimble, stripped-down racing machines make for some good high-speed action, although they don't seem to like running on grass or hitting walls. Funny that. After that, you can go down under for a V8 Supercar race at Phillip Island, followed by a DTM AMG Mercedes bash at the Hockenheimring - both events giving you far more sturdy, if not quite so fast, machines.

I'd call TOCA a 30-car pileup if cars were racing genres and massive accidents got me really hot. It's a smooth, sexy sampler of every driving type and terrain imaginable--from open-wheel racing to rally to big rigs in Africa (no foolin'). Online or offline, it's much more diverse and organic than the sterile Gotham or redundant RalliSport, though not as deep as either. Details like the turbos whining as they spooled volumes of boost through my Skyline's engine until I let up to a satisfying chuff from the blow-off valve, as well as keen physics--exaggerated just a touch to make the skids, flips, and spectacular piece-by-piece damage more dynamic--sucked me right in. It's a great title for beginners and seasoned vets looking for a not-too-serious commitment. I found the linear progression pretty limiting--I couldn't stray much from the beaten path--but nothing else really turned up to crash my TOCA party. Sorry, folks, but here's yet another Xbox racer you may have to buy this year.

TOCA delivers the ultimate in hardcore gearhead bragging rights: a clutch button. You don't have to use it, but it's there. This is Codemasters' Gran Turismo, with less tinkering, garage puttering, and a little less polish, but far more diverse race classes (from Formula Ford to...semitrucks?) and a career mode that, while silly at times, actually tells a story. It's tough but rewarding if you have the skill and patience. TOCA also offers 12-player online racing (with optional CPU cars to round out the field), though it lacks the extra Live features that made Project Gotham Racing 2 so great.

TOCA differentiates itself from a crowded genre by covering, quite literally, the gamut of motorsport competitions. For a jack-of-all-trades-style racer, TOCA plays surprisingly well in all categories, mostly due to the game's brutal, yet addictively realistic physics and collision system. Whether you're driving a Subaru WRX on ice in a rallycross face-off or doing laps in a NASCAR-like oval, TOCA feels, on a gameplay level, fundamentally consistent within its own automotive reality--on and off Xbox Live.

The PC version of the game features 31 licensed and fictional global race locations offering 48 tracks. These include Hockenheim from the German DTM series and Surfers Paradise from the Australian V8 series. The PS2 version features an additional track, Cataluyna.
